What Sustainable Fashion Means to Me
Share
Sustainable fashion can mean many different things to different people and brands.
For me, it means creating and wearing fashion I genuinely feel good supporting. Clothing that reflects my values, my creativity, and my respect for people, animals, and the planet.
Fashion is a form of self-expression, but it should also align with our social and environmental expectations. I want to know that the clothing I wear is made with care, intention, and greater awareness of its impact.
Years ago, before I entered the fashion world and began studying fashion design, I honestly did not think much about how clothing was made. Like many people, I assumed garments were produced safely and ethically. That changed when I learned about the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh in 2013.
It opened my eyes to the reality behind parts of the fashion industry: unsafe working conditions, environmental pollution, excessive waste, and the treatment of animals in certain sectors of fashion production. From that moment on, sustainability became deeply personal to me.
What Is Sustainable Fashion?
At its core, sustainability means creating and consuming in a way that does not exhaust the resources future generations will depend on.
The well-known United Nations Brundtland Report Our Common Future defined sustainable development as:
“Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
In fashion, this often overlaps with the concept of Slow Fashion, a movement that developed as a response to fast fashion and overconsumption.
Slow fashion encourages:
- quality over quantity
- timeless design over short-lived trends
- conscious consumption
- ethical production
- appreciation for the garments we own
Rather than treating clothing as disposable, sustainable fashion invites us to buy with intention and wear pieces we truly love for years to come.
What Makes Fashion More Sustainable?
Sustainable and slow fashion can include many different practices, such as:
- using organic or recycled materials
- reducing waste in production
- creating timeless, versatile designs
- producing garments more responsibly
- minimizing harmful chemicals
- reducing unnecessary overproduction
- supporting fairer working conditions
- encouraging reuse, recycling, and second-hand fashion
No brand is perfect, and sustainability is an ongoing journey of improvement. But every conscious choice matters.
What Sustainability Means for the Anke Wonder Brand

For my brand, sustainability means doing my best to lower fashion’s impact while still creating meaningful, expressive, and wearable designs.
Today, my collections focus on print-on-demand clothing and accessories made with materials such as organic cotton and recycled polyester. Print-on-demand production also helps reduce unnecessary overproduction because items are created especially for the customer instead of being mass-produced in large quantities.
My work is deeply inspired by creativity, compassion, healing, animals, nature, and conscious living. Many of my designs reflect themes close to my heart, including vegan living, emotional healing, spirituality, rescue animals, guinea pigs, and mindful self-expression.
I still carry the same values that shaped my original fashion journey:
- creating with intention
- avoiding waste where possible
- choosing more conscious materials
- and continuing to learn and improve along the way
Sustainability is not about perfection. It is about awareness, responsibility, and making better choices step by step.
